Research has been carried out by NASA, the American Space Agency, which shows that certain plants are beneficial in cleaning the air of nasty chemicals such as Trichlorotheylene and Toluene, both of which are known carcinogens.

Plants help to put water vapour back into the air, combating the drying effects of air conditioning, which aside from being unpleasant - is considered to be a contributing factor in "Sick Building Syndrome". Incidentally, research has shown that plants can improve productivity by as much as 10%.
